Save Gas—Make Gas

Poster No. 129, issued by the Office of Civic Digestion during fuel rationing, advising households to cut the mains by raising their own gas from the digester.

A fuel-rationing poster split in two: on the left a citizen shutting off a mains gas ring at a darkened stove, on the right the same citizen lighting a bright flame fed from a backyard digester, an idle filling-station pump between them, captioned SAVE GAS—MAKE GAS.

Poster No. 129. Issued by the Office of Civic Digestion, circa 1943, during the fuel-rationing period and posted at filling stations, gas-works gates, and kitchens, advising households to cut their draw on the mains by raising their own gas from the digester. The dash between the two identical words was set by hand; surviving copies vary in the gap by a hair, and collectors sort them by it. The plate is held in the Bureau of Renewable Discourse archive.
