The Sewer Is Not a Lost-and-Found Department

The Office of Civic Digestion recovers thousands of objects from the district interceptors each week and states plainly that the sewer returns none of them.

The Office maintains a bar screen at each district interceptor to keep solid objects out of the Municipal Digester. In an average week it recovers a great deal that was never meant to reach it. Residents have lately begun arriving at the interceptor office to ask after these objects by name. The Office wishes to be clear, kindly and finally, about what it is and is not.

The following were recovered from the district interceptors this week and are presently held pending disposition:

  1. Fourteen wedding rings. Six were reported missing, four were not, and four have not yet been noticed gone.

  2. A complete set of dentures, upper and lower, matched, and in better condition than the screen that caught them.

  3. Thirty-one cellular telephones. None survived the journey. Several continued to ring.

  4. A house key, a car key, and a key whose lock the Office has not located and would rather not.

  5. One live goldfish, recovered at the third screen, now the property of the Office and named by the crew.

  6. A passport, valid and current, in the name of a resident who has not come to claim it and about whom the Office is now quietly curious.

Recovered items are held thirty days at the interceptor office and then rendered to the digester or the record, as their nature requires. The sewer is not a lost-and-found. It is a one-way civic system with a good memory and no shelf. What it takes, it keeps, until the Office decides otherwise. Residents are welcome to grieve the item. They are asked not to reach for it.
