An Ice Mold Rated for Weddings

Logged during commercial survey: a silicone tray whose only specified function is the shape of the thing it releases into the glass.

A WPA-style illustration of a silicone ice tray with coiled cavities resting on a counter beside a tall glass of water holding a single floating coiled cube, paper lanterns suggested behind, above a banner reading FOR WEDDINGS AND FESTIVALS.

This finding was entered during the Bureau's standing survey of the commercial market, the purpose of which is to place unusual items on the record while they are still merely for sale and before they arrive, unannounced, in a drink.

The item is a silicone ice cube tray, sold two to a pack. Its cavities are shaped so that the cubes they release are not cubes. They are turd-shaped, and they float, which is a property of ice and therefore not in dispute. The listing markets the pack for weddings and festivals.

The Bureau records the following without judgment. Most kitchen molds are sold on the strength of what the finished item does — a novelty tray that chills faster, a large-format cube that melts slower, a sphere that dilutes a spirit at a measured rate. This tray makes no such claim. It offers a shape and stops there. Documentation specifies the two settings in which the shape is intended to appear and specifies nothing the shape is intended to accomplish once it arrives. The occasion is named. The function is not, because there is not one beyond the shape itself.

That is the finding. A tray sold in pairs, rated by its own listing for the two most photographed gatherings a person is likely to host, whose single deliverable is a floating form that makes the beverage it enters look worse rather than better, deliberately, and by design.

The finding is filed as observed. The item is commercially available as described: a two-pack of silicone trays producing floating, coiled ice, marketed for weddings and festivals. The Bureau evaluates neither the shape nor the occasions and recommends nothing regarding either. It records only that the product performs exactly one operation, that the operation is to the drink and not for it, and that this was disclosed plainly enough to be entered into the record without correction.
