Steps
- Learn the baseline first. Spend a healthy week noting what your working drum smells like — earthy, faintly of a barnyard. You cannot rank a change you never measured against normal.

Read the bottom row twice. A rotten-egg smell is a warning you can act on; the absence of it, on a drum that ought to smell of something, is the reading that should move your feet. Your nose stops registering hydrogen sulfide at exactly the concentrations where it becomes dangerous, so "it stopped smelling" is never good news — it is the drum going quiet in the one sense you were relying on.

Maintenance & safety
