A Sack Labeled MANURE, Sold Empty, for the Wall

This finding was entered during the Bureau's standing survey of the commercial market, kept so that items reaching general availability are documented before a citizen has to explain one that is already hanging on a wall.

The item is a burlap storage bag. Screen-printed across the front, in capital letters, is the word MANURE. It is sold empty. The listing markets it explicitly as wall decor rather than as a vessel for anything, and states plainly that no manure is included.

The Bureau records the following without judgment. A storage bag is, by definition, an object defined by what it is meant to hold. This one is defined instead by what it says, and what it says is the name of a substance it is not sold containing and not intended to contain. The container has been separated from its contents at the point of manufacture, and it is the container — labeled, empty, and framed for a wall — that reached the market. The word does the work the sack was built to do. The sack is now the frame for the word.

That is the finding. A vessel offered on the express condition that it remain a vessel in name only; a label with a bag attached; a product whose entire specification is a declaration of a capacity it will never be asked to fill.

The finding is filed as observed. The item is commercially available as described: a screen-printed burlap sack reading MANURE in capitals, sold empty, marketed as decoration, no manure included. The Bureau assesses neither the burlap nor the lettering and recommends nothing about either. It records only that the object is honest about being a container that will not contain, that this honesty is the product, and that the market found it sufficient to list on those terms.
