Artifact 001: The Ceremonial Plunger

The gilt presentation plunger struck to open the first Municipal Fart Grid interconnect in 1931, catalogued with its provenance, condition, and the terms under which it may be shown.

Provenance

Struck for the opening of the first Municipal Fart Grid interconnect, the plunger was held aloft — never lowered — at the 1931 ceremony and passed afterward to the Office of Civic Digestion, which stored it in a supply closet for forty years in the belief that it was a spare. It was recovered in 1974, correctly identified, and accessioned the same week.

Condition report

Gilding is stable, with minor loss at the grip. The rubber cup retains its original resilience and shows a single seated compression at the rim; there is no evidence of use beyond the ceremonial one. Conservators have declined to clean the interior of the cup, holding that the residue is itself the record.

Terms of loan

The object may travel to accredited institutions on the standing condition that it never be demonstrated. The Museum has refused four such requests to date. It was struck to be raised, and the collection intends to keep raising it.
